Stars against AIDS in Moscow on World AIDS DAY
26 November 2008
On December 1, World AIDS Day, the photo exhibition “Stars against AIDS” opens in the All-Russian State Library of Foreign Literature.
The photography exhibit, sponsored by the Joint United Nations Programme on AIDS/HIV (UNAIDS) – unites 25 accomplished women -- actresses, journalists, editors, singers, and sportswomen – from Russia and Ukraine in a joint effort to combat the stigma and discrimination that often characterizes the response to HIV/AIDS. -. They all believe it is their duty speak openly about the danger of intolerance and the need to reduce the stigma against people living with HIV. The project’s participants are concerned that today Russia and Ukraine lead Europe in the number of newly registered cases of HIV-infection. They are disturbed that the epidemic has acquired a “female face”. In 2007, in Russia 44% of all new cases of HIV-infection were women.

December 1, 2008, marks the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day. This year’s theme is “Lead – Empower – Deliver”, building on last year’s theme of “Take the Lead”. Designating leadership as the World AIDS Day theme for 2007 – 2008 provides an opportunity to highlight the political leadership needed to fulfill commitments that have been made in the response to AIDS – particularly the promises made by the countries that participated in the UN General Assembly Special Session on AIDS that committed to ensuring universal access to HIV prevention, treatment, care and support by 2010.
Special guests at the opening will include Lyudmilla Ulitskaya, writer, Diana Gurtskaya, singer, representatives of the nonprofit organization “Phoenix- Plus” the Red Ribbon award winner from the town of Orel and Serge Golovach, photographer.
The exhibition opening takes place in the White Hall of the All-Russian State Library of Foreign Literature at 17.00 (Nikoloyamskaya ul, d. 1). The exhibition will run from December 1 to 14, 2008.
